Joining A Gym in 2019?

I know Christmas isn’t out of the way yet but already I’ve heard lots of people talking about joining a gym and losing weight in 2019. So it made me think, what do people look for in a gym? I have a gym membership through work but if I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t go to that particular gym for a few reasons. So, my bloggers mind got whirring and I thought I’d pop together some ideas on what to look for in a gym.

The Vicinity:

The gym I’m a member of is right next door to work, which is very convenient during the time I’m at work. However, I refuse to drive to it when I’m not at work as it’s half an hour away which means I have to add an hour on to the time I’ll actually be there working out. I can just do it quicker at home! Make sure the gym you choose is close to where you want it to be. You might prefer it to be closer to home (less chance of bumping in to colleagues whilst you’re a sweaty mess!) or you might prefer it to be near work where you can go straight there before or after work. Or you might choose somewhere in the middle so at the weekend it’s still not too far away.

The Facilities:

You might choose a “no frills gym” where they have all the equipment but little else. You might want a gym with a pool so you can swim as well as workout. Do you want hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas? You might want a gym that has straighteners and good quality hair dryers in the changing rooms so if you need to go to work or go out afterwards, it saves you lugging those things there. Some gyms have cafes, salons and in house physios etc. Be sure to have a tour of the gym you’re thinking of where you can look at everything available and ask any questions.

The Classes:

If you’re someone who enjoys group workouts be sure to see what the schedule of classes is like. Do they do the classes you want? Are they at times you’ll be able to make or are all the good ones whilst you’re going to be at work? A lot of gyms publish their class schedules online so this might be something you can look at before signing up.

The Cost:

Obviously you need to be able to afford the gym membership. There are so many cheaper gyms popping up now where the membership offers are really good. Have a look what they offer in terms of off peak/on peak times. Some gyms are cheaper if you use them during their off peak hours and if you can benefit from this then do! Some of the fancier gyms can be really expensive so you need to ask yourself how much do you want to spend. A gym I looked at looks really good in terms of what it has to offer but at £75 a month it’s very expensive. If you’re a regular traveller for work then it might be worth looking in to joining a gym which has many studios all around the country. Quite often they’ll offer a membership where you aren’t limited to just one gym.

2017 Goals An Update Part Three

2017 Goals

At the beginning of 2017 I set some goals for the year ahead. I have been updating these quarterly and it’s time for the 3rd update already!

Want to read the first two posts? They’re here: 2017 Goals & 2017 Goals Update 1 2017 Goals Part Two

So let’s see how I’ve been getting on…

Health

I’ve not been doing so well on this lately. My weight loss is stuck at the 2 stone mark. I’m trying to eat healthier by going to the salad bar at for lunch most days but I have to confess, sometimes the temptation of the hot meal is too much. Also the salad bar is sometimes a bit of a loose name for it, there’s not always that much salad in it! I keep thinking of going back to making my own fresh lunches and freezing them. This worked out well for me. I have however joined a gym and am enjoying attending spin classes there.

parkrun

I am doing well in this! I started parkrunning in May and in September I ran to 4 out of 5 parkruns. I’ve gone from a time of 58:24 at my first parkrun to 45:25 at my last run. I’m really pleased. I’ve gone from walking the course, to walking then run walking a bit of the course to now run walking the whole course. I’m hoping to get under 45 minutes soon!

Read more books

I’m doing ok with this. Probably not as good as I’d like but I am reading and that’s the main thing. I’m currently on my 14th book of the year. For some people that’s probably a lot, but I know for others, that’s barely any! I went to the library recently and enjoyed reading an actual physical book again! I posted about I’d read over the Summer here: What I Read This Summer I intend to post a comprehensive list at the end of the year.

be me

I’m still doing well with this and I’m finding I’m becoming more confident in being honest with people and saying “Sorry, but it’s not for me”

I’ll post another update on my goals at the end of the year, but for now, how are you doing with your 2017 goals?

2017 – An update part two

2017 Goals

It’s time to update you all on my 2017 goals. If you want to read my original post where I set the goals, it’s here and if you’d like to read my first update which was published in March, it’s here.

Health

I’m continuing to do well with this. I’m being mindful when making food choices. My new work has a salad bar which is free, or you can eat a hot lunch. I’m making sure I access the salad bar most days only having the hot lunch once a week, or sometimes not at all. This is working out well and I’ve now lost almost two stone.

parkrun

As you know, this is going well. When the 2017 dawned, I’d never completed a parkrun. Now I’ve completed three and I’m loving it. I have improved my time each time going from 58:24 down to 53:27. I hope to keep improving this. I’ve found by completing more parkruns, it’s making me be more mindful of food choices and making want to exercise more in other ways too. If you want to read my posts on parkrun they can be found below:

My First parkrun

My Second parkrun

My Third parkrun

Read more books

In my last update I wasn’t doing too well with this goal. I had read three books and listened to the Harry Potter audio books. I’ve now got back in to reading and have read 9 books. I’ll probably post a list of what books I’ve read at the end of the year as I don’t plan on reviewing them all.

be me

Again this is going well. I’m only accepting invitations for events I really want to attend. Because I work with a lot of young people, they have a constant desire it seems to be out of the house away from their parents, whereas I actually like being at home. It’s lovely they invite me but sometimes I just prefer to be at home!

2017 Goals – An update part 1

2017 Goals

At the beginning of 2017 I set myself 4 goals to achieve. Since we’re in March already, and we’re a quarter of the way through the year I thought it was time to do an update.

Health

The first goal was to take charge of my health. I’d started this towards the end of 2016 so it was natural to keep it going in 2017. I’m preparing fresh and healthy lunches as well as watching what I eat in the evenings. I’ve also started trying to exercise twice a week, although I’m not always making twice but  I have lost over a stone which I’m pleased about.

parkrun

As part of trying to be healthier I’m doing more walking and have started Couch to 5K. I want to be able to complete a parkrun. I’m not bothered about running all of it just yet but would like to complete it in under an hour. Even if it’s 59:59! I’m using the medals I’m earning through Virtual Runner UK to keep me in check and motivate me to keep trying.

Read more books

I started off really well with this goal. I read three books quite quickly but then haven’t read anything for a while. I need to get back in to this. I have however been listening to audio books. My husband doesn’t enjoy reading but wants to read the Harry Potter books so we’ve downloaded them and have been listening to them. We’re currently on the second book.

be me

I’m actually surprised how easy I’ve found this one. I was dreading learning how to say no to people but actually I’ve been true to myself and have turned down social opportunities I’m just not interested in.

So that’s my 2017 goals update. I hope everyone else is managing to stay on track with their personal goals.

February Roundup

Another month in 2017 over already. February seems to have gone by in a bit of a blur! So what did I get up to?

At the beginning of February I went with some friends to the new Watermark at West Quay shopping centre in Southampton. We went to Cosmo, which was my recommendation having already visited the restaurant in Sheffield. Thankfully it lived up to my expectations and we had some lovely food as well as a good catch up. When we got there they had decorated with red lanterns for Chinese New Year.

One Sunday afternoon we went for a drive out in to the New Forest and ended up in Lymington. We found the harbour and went for a walk around. It was lovely, and very quiet as it was so chilly. Afterwards we went to Milford on Sea which seems to be the closest point on the mainland that you can get to the Isle of Wight. The waves were huge so naturally I took a picture (which really doesn’t do the waves justice) but you can see the Isle of Wight in the background and also The Needles. One day I’ll get myself over to the Isle of Wight and explore!

Another Sunday afternoon we went for a drive out to Southsea. As we drove along from Southsea to Eastney we saw these beach huts and I had to get out and take a picture. They look a little dishevelled, like the Winter hasn’t treat them well. I’m sure they’ll look splendid in the Summer. I love the colours.

2017 Goals

2017 Goals

I’m not usually one for making goals, but maybe this is why nothing ever changes for me? I’m not setting myself specific targets but goals I’d like to work towards throughout 2017.

Health

In 2017 I want to continue taking charge of my health. I started this in the latter part of 2016 by preparing healthy lunches to take to work. During the week between Christmas and New Year I’ve made sure I’ve done something active every day be it a walk or a bike ride. I hope to continue getting in a bit more activity.

Read more books

This is a goal you see a lot. I love reading but I tend to spend more time reading blogs, Facebook, Twitter etc. when actually I could read a book. I’ve read lots between Christmas and New Year  and I hope to keep this up through 2017. Once upon a time I used to keep track of all the books I read in a year. Maybe this will add an incentive to keep reading.

parkrun

It’s time to complete one…and maybe a second if I enjoy it! I love volunteering at parkrun and to date have volunteered 70 times! (71 on New Years Day) Yet I’ve never completed a parkrun. It’s time to change that.

be me

I need to embrace my inner me. I sometimes feel like I have to accept every invitation that comes my way and whilst that’s ok sometimes, fact of the matter is I like being at home. I’m not in to going out and having a wild time anymore, that just isn’t me and I need to learn to be comfortable with that.

So that’s my goals for 2017, what are yours?

Christmas Haul Part 4 – Finishing Touches

This is the last in my Christmas Haul series. Why not read Parts 1, 2 and 3 to catch up?

This haul is all from Finishing Touches is a lovely gift shop right here in Lee on Solent. It has two branches, both are gift shops but as the season approaches one becomes a Christmas shop and it is literally crammed full of the loveliest Christmas decorations.

Finishing Touches

Taken from Google Maps

In the next two pictures is everything I bought:

And now for the close ups!

Firstly the Reindeer Tea Light Holder

He is so cute with his little fur hat and his little black lantern. I couldn’t resist.

Next it’s the round Reindeer decorations.

Reindeer Christmas Decoration

This is actually really similar to some Reindeers we got from Debenhams years ago so I got two of these to compliment the ones we already have.

Then we have the two wooden tree decorations

I got two of these too. They’re going to look adorable on my Christmas tree, just look at their happy little faces!

Then finally the four wooden reindeers. I got two large and two small.

These are gorgeous solid wood pieces and although I got them from the Christmas shop I think these will be going in to our bedroom all year round afterwards to go with our Woodland theme. I think I can get away with them as they’re not overtly Christmassy!

So that brings my Christmas Haul to an end. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these posts as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them. I’m well and truly ready for Christmas now!

Christmas Haul Part 3 – John Lewis

I’ve really enjoyed writing these posts so I really hope you’ve enjoyed reading them. If you missed Parts 1 and 2 they can be found here and here

By now I’m pretty sure you’ve all seen the John Lewis Christmas advert set in Buster’s Garden. If you haven’t here it is:

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ll know I have foxes in my garden. If you didn’t know be sure to take a look at my Fantastic Mr. Fox post.

Read it? Ok so I’m sure that post has pretty much explained why I had to pick up these two beauties from the Buster’s Garden collection.

Meet Olivia and Otto! How cute are they?! I know they aren’t super Christmassy but after Christmas is done I plan on relocating them to the bedroom to add to our Woodland theme in there. They’re so lovely and super soft.

These were £12 each but 10% of each goes to The Wildlife Trusts which is such a good charity. I’m glad they’re helping a charity with their advert.

Tomorrow will be the last of my Christmas Haul Posts but if you’ve missed Parts 1 and 2 they’re available for you here and here. I hope they help to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Haul Part 2 – Garsons Garden Centre

I hope you liked yesterday’s post with my stunning Cath Kidston Snow Globes. Today I’m showing you the items I bought from Garsons Garden Centre. The Garsons I visited was the Titchfield store near Fareham.

Here’s a little something you might not know about me. I love Reindeers and approximately 95% of my Christmas decorations are Reindeers. There’s a couple of other things that I’ve allowed to sneak in. So naturally everything I bought at Garsons has something to do with Reindeers.

Here’s everything together.

Reindeer Christmas Decorations

Now for the close ups! The first thing I picked up is this gorgeous wooden Reindeer Tea Light Lantern.

This comes with a glass holder for the tea light to sit in. I bought two to go either side of my fire place. They’ll be lovely lit, giving a warm glow whilst watching Christmas movies! So cosy!

Last year we had a large Christmas tree and definitely didn’t have enough decorations so when I saw these cute felt Reindeers I knew they were what we needed to extend our decoration collection!

Felt Reindeer Christmas Decoration

These were in two colours, red and white, so I bought two red and two white. They were only £1.49 which is a bargain!

Last but not least I got two of these happy little faces.

Felt Reindeer Head Christmas Decoration

I couldn’t resist! I like the way this looks home made but looks a lot better than anything I could ever make!

Don’t forget to pop back tomorrow to see what else I’ve been buying! Can’t wait until tomorrow? Why not take a look at yesterday’s post?

Christmas Haul Part 1 – Cath Kidston

So it’s officially December and now the Christmas posts can begin.

I’ve been well and truly getting in to the Christmas spirit lately by doing a little Christmas Shopping. So over the next few days I’m going to bring you posts about what I bought. I’m going to start with Cath Kidston.

Cath Kidston is easily my favourite shop. I own over 50 Cath Kidston bags so I’m always browsing their catalogues and website. When the Christmas Catalogue came I was browsing through and instantly fell in love with two snow globes they had to offer. I ordered them right away.

The first one is the blue London Snow Globe.

Cath Kidston London Christmas Snow Globe

I love Cath Kidston because it’s so quintessentially British and it doesn’t get more British than Big Ben and a red London bus!

The second one I ordered is the red Billie Snow Globe.

Red Cath Kidston Billie Christmas Snow Globe

A nice little surprise that I didn’t know when these arrived is that they’re also musical! They play We Wish You A Merry Christmas in the same plinky plonky way a jewellery box did when you were a child.

I absolutely love these and know they’re going to look lovely with all my other Christmas decorations.

Look out for my other Christmas Haul Posts.
