We’re still going back in time to catch up with my runs…
On 5th May I completed my 30th parkrun. I was apprehensive after my disastrous morning run on the Wednesday before. Even though I’m learning not every run is going to be amazing, I still worry what if they all feel bad. I was also apprehensive because of the heat. It was already very warm when I left at 8.40am.
Today I was running with fellow parkrunner Janette. Janette used to regularly run parkrun but now due to work commitments has struggled to attend so she was looking for a gentle plod. And if you’re after a gentle plod, I’m your girl.
We ended up running with Ange too. Both of them were really lovely whilst we were running, continually checking if I was ok as I’m really not good in the heat. Gingers aren’t made for heat waves!
I actually managed to do quite well though. I walked twice, once at the top of the mini hill where I just needed to catch my breath and then again on the shingle section as I’m just so scared of turning an ankle on the deep parts. Shingle is not easy to manoeuvre over.
I managed to finish in 45:24 which I was pleased with. When I was walking to parkrun that morning I’d said to myself if it’s too hot just walk it as I really do struggle with heat. My average pace was 14:22 minute miles and mile 3 wasn’t my slowest for once! Meaning I actually sped up during mile 3!
In the evening we went to Miller and Carter with my Mum as it was her Birthday. Miller and Carter is a steak house and I’m pretty sure it’s nationwide. I had a ribeye steak, my favourite, and a side of Lobster mac and cheese. I’m so disappointed in myself though as I didn’t take any pictures apart from one of the coffee I had at the end of the meal!
On the way home we stopped to look at the sunset, which was beautiful.
Do you prefer to run in the warmer weather or cooler?
Since getting back from Scotland in mid-March I’ve not blogged much. I thought I’d do a bit of a catch up instead of lots of posts that I feel behind with! This way I can get caught up in on fell swoop and I’ll be back on track.
Since getting back from Scotland I’ve both lost and found my running mojo. When we were in Scotland I only ran once at Aviemore parkrun. We did lots of walking though which I thought would make up for it. My first parkrun back was horrendous. I put it down to all the good eating in Scotland and potentially being a bit dehydrated from the long car journey the day before. My friend Lorna, who is funnily enough Scottish, came and ran with me. I met Lorna at junior parkrun but this is the first time we’ve managed to do a full parkrun together. parkrun were running a competition to win a mattress for anyone that ran in their pyjamas, so in our pyjamas we ran! I ran all the way bar the shingle section but my time was absolutely terrible. I wore my “Let it Snow” pyjamas which was a bit tongue in cheek as we were due to get the Beast from the East 2.0 that afternoon…and we did!
There were talks of maybe having to cancel junior parkrun the next day. However, unlike the adult parkrun, the junior parkrun has a field beside it and we were able to offer a 2km run on the field. It was covered in snow but was safe for a run as it wasn’t becoming compact ice like the prom was. We only had 20 children turn up but they had so much fun. They were making snow angels and throwing snow balls whilst completing the course. Hopefully they made some memories that day that’ll last a long time.

The following Saturday I ran/walked parkrun with the run 1 minute/walk 1 minute pacer Sam. He was brilliant at spurring me on and when I started to slow he asked me what I was feeling. When I told him he told me I was dehydrated and he was probably right. I must learn to drink more.
I went to see the physio again. I told him I get the niggly Achilles that’s plagued me since last September. He told me it’s because I have high arches on my feet and recommended I buy a pedi roller to roll out my feet after running. He also suggested getting some heel lifts for my running shoes. Afterwards he gave me a massage to help the Achilles and oh my word it was so nice! I honestly could have fallen asleep laid on the table. Afterwards he said not to see him again unless I am injured which was good.
After my physio session I went to the printing shop where my running club use as their stockist for the t-shirts and hoodies etc. that they offer. I ordered my t-shirt that you get for free upon joining. Since I joined way back in October or November they had no record of my ticket but luckily I was able to get the membership secretary to email them and confirm I was indeed entitled to the t-shirt.
On Good Friday, as I was off work I made a conscious effort to ensure I was well hydrated ready for parkrun on Saturday. My plan was to join Sam again and run/walk as I hadn’t run since the Saturday before (Uh oh!) but when I got there my friend Claire said she wanted to run with me. I explained my plan of run/walking and she firmly told me we’d be running it and all I had to do was set the pace. Not going to lie I felt a bit worried as I hadn’t run all week again but we set off and actually I felt good. I ran the whole of it bar the ramp as the wind was making it hard to catch my breathe. Now, usually when I run the whole of it I’m a good couple of minutes slower than my PB but we finished within a minute of my PB! I couldn’t believe it. I felt really pleased and it’s actually made me feel like I want to run more whereas before I’d been struggling to find the motivation.

Spin Classes/Strength and Conditioning
My attendance at spin class has been somewhat erratic but since getting back from Scotland I’ve been on every Thursday and Sunday since so that’d good and I’m wondering if that’s helped my running on the Saturday after Good Friday. I got within 0.2 miles of my PB distance on Thursday. If I’d have known I was that close I’d have pedalled like mad to try and make it up!
I’ve also been attending a Strength and Conditioning class with my physio. It’s on Monday nights and costs £5. This has proven to be really good value as, so far, there’s only ever been 4 of us in the class. I’ve been going Paul, the ED of junior parkrun and my good friend Maggie’s husband. I went in to that first class a bit clueless I have to admit. I thought it might be yoga based, whereas Paul suggested it might be circuits. Paul was right! I didn’t expect to really sweat in the class but my word I was pouring with it. My legs ached as soon as we left the class but it only got worse and it was Friday before I could walk upstairs without really feeling it! After the 2nd class my legs weren’t too bad at all which was a relief. However, my physio is now going for an operation so won’t be holding the class for the next 3 weeks. I didn’t want to undo all my hard work so after last weeks class I wrote down all the exercises we’d done whilst it was fresh in my mind and then did my own version of the class last night. I hope the strength and conditioning pays off and helps with my running.

And just to finish off. I thought I’d just include some pretty pictures I’ve taken over the last couple of weeks.
A sure sign of Spring is daffodils. On the sea front is a large grassy area where all these daffodils have popped up.
Shortly after taking the picture of the daffodils the sun began to set so I snapped a picture of that too.
I know this post is late but to be honest I’ve had some problems with webhosting and wordpress that just put me in to a bit of a blog funk and I didn’t want to update it. However, I finally seem to have it all fixed so hopefully now I’ll feel like updating a little more!
Now, on to July. July was a good month where I concentrated on my running and felt like I was coming on in leaps and bounds. However, now injury has struck and I find myself in a running funk! More on that in another blog post.
July started off with our 2nd Birthday at Lee-on-the-Solent parkrun. We had a fancy dress and cake theme. I was joint RD along with the Event Director Maggie. I did the run brief up the ladder and that’s where this picture comes from. Taken by Kieran.
On 3rd July we went for an evening walk and I managed to grab this shot. There’s nothing like a car park full of seagulls taking flight as you walk through to remind you that you live at the seaside!
In June I took part in one of the challenges on Virtual Runner to earn the mermaid medal. I completed 25.5km throughout the month and my medal arrived at the beginning of July. I must do a blog post about this! But for now, check out the medal. Super cool!
In July I completed two parkruns and this picture shows my current PB.
Probably one of the most awesome things to happen to me was that Starbucks UK featured this picture on their Instagram after I posted on mine and tagged them.
Finally in July the USS George H W Bush came to visit Stokes Bay which attracted people in their droves! It was a huge boat. I took this picture of it from Pebbles Café after we finished up at Stokes Bay junior parkrun. It actually doesn’t look that big in the photograph!
And finally it wouldn’t be my blog without a sunset picture! So to finish, here is a sunset picture!
I know I’m getting to this April roundup a little late. In fact, we’re almost half way through May already but hey, better late than never right?!
In April I went to the cinema for the first time in over two years. Of course it was to see Beauty and the Beast! I was dubious about the remake, wondering if it would be as good as the original animated cartoon version from 1991 that I remember watching over and over on VHS as a child. In truth, the remake was wonderful and every bit as magical as the original if not more due to the progression in film making. I was enthralled from start to finish.
I also left my job in April and one of my leaving gifts from my colleague was this wonderful chip cup!
I got lots of lovely gifts from my colleagues and the children and I got lots of flowers! I had 7 vases brimming with beautiful blooms! Below is just one of them. I love tulips, they’re so pretty and vibrant.
Of course in April I’ve also taken some beach pictures when I’ve been out walking. I’m still determined to keep gaining fitness by walking more often.
I love how the sun is reflecting off the wet sand in the second picture. Sun set at the beach is the best. As I’ve been doing lots of walking I’ve also discovered some new places in and around where I live. Below are photos of Fort Gilkicker that was built in 1863 and is soon to become “luxury homes” and the Haslar sea wall where you can see across to Portsmouth Harbour.
As I’ve been doing lots of walking I wanted a new way of recording my walks as for some reason, despite having a full battery my phone will die when using apps like Strava and say it has no battery, thus losing my data. Then, annoyingly, when I get home and plug it in my phone shows a full charge again! I hunted high and low for my old Garmin Forerunner 410 but despite being sure I brought it from Sheffield with us, I couldn’t find it anywhere. I researched a few different tracking watches and settled on the Garmin Forerunner 35. It’s simple to use, tracks heart rate and has GPS. I’m pretty pleased with it and am loving tracking all the stats again.
I’ve also continued to volunteer at my local parkrun. I decided to go back to marshalling as I usually do a funnel role. I loved being back out on the course cheering everyone on. I was put back in my old marshalling spot of the playground which just so happens to have a café right at the side of it so it was coffee and marshalling for me!
Speaking of parkrun we’ve also had confirmation of the junior parkrun we’ve been setting up. Stokes Bay junior parkrun will start on 4th June! We’re all so excited about this. The trial is on Saturday afternoon for us to try out all the equipment and make sure everything works before we do it for real. Afterwards we have to have a training session on being an RD at a Junior parkrun. I’m guessing this will cover some safeguarding aspects with it being juniors.

So January has been and gone. I haven’t blogged a lot in January but to be honest I haven’t done a lot and I only want to blog when I have something to blog about. In January I’ve been working really hard and this has taken a bit of a toll on my health. I’ve had a constant cold and sore throat as a result of being run down. It feels crazy to be run down when we only just had the Christmas break but that’s where I’m at.
So on to the round up. In January it was my Birthday. I received some lovely presents from family and friends and celebrated with plenty of yummy food. Whilst at West Quay for my birthday lunch I found these gorgeous Kilner jars in John Lewis. I have never seen jars with the coloured lids like these. So I snapped up two of each colour. They were reduced in the January sales too which made them even sweeter.
I also did gel nails for my birthday. My nails are seriously weak though after removing them 🙁
During January I also worked hard on achieving the unicorn medal I mentioned in my previous post I Am A Unicorn way back in November. This should have been easily achievable but with a malfunctioning treadmill and a phone dying instead of recording my walk I actually had to do a lot more than the given 10K distance. There’s a review of how I achieved it coming up but here’s a picture I took on one of the walks.
I thought I’d see how I was going with my 2017 goals too. Hopefully by revisiting them each month it’ll keep them fresh in my memory.
Health – Taking charge – I’m now taking both healthy breakfasts and lunches to work and I have stuck to this throughout January. I’ve also cooked a lot more in an evening so these meals are healthier too. I’ve mainly been using Joe Wicks Cook Books.
Read – Lots More Books – I’m on my third book of the year.
parkrun – I haven’t completed one. I have completed 3 5K walks in January though. Still suffering terribly with the leg pain that stopped me running in the first place though.
Be Me – I turned down the opportunity to go out out and confidently said “That’s not me” and it was ok!
Pretty pleased with how I’m going with my goals so far. Looking forward to seeing how I get on in February. I think my first goal will be helped by lighter evenings and warmer weather!

I’m a little late in posting this but here is my roundup of February in pictures. I can not believe it’s already March! It only seems two minutes since Christmas was here but now there’s a definite feel of Spring in the air and I’m so ready for warm evenings and new blooms.
February saw some great sunsets. This picture is taken at Stokes Bay, the next bay along from ours.
I got two new candles from a local shop with a 25% discount! I’ve never used Village Candle before. Review to follow!
In February we went to eat out a couple of times in Portsmouth which houses the Spinnaker Tower. I thought this angle was different to how you would usually see it.
There were some gorgeous days in February where we saw sunshine and blue skies. I enjoyed getting out and about!
I made a good effort with my nails in February, something which has fell by the way side so far in March. I must try harder!
Whilst walking along the beach I found a heart shaped stone. I pocketed it and brought it home to add to my little seaside display in the hall.
Despite February having some lovely days there was also strong winds and rain. When I took this photo I was trying to capture the waves crashing in. Usually the Solent is reasonably still.
